Passports must renewed in 30 business days or full refund
Service Canada has introduced a new guarantee for passport renewals, promising processing within six weeks or a full refund, as announced by Citizens’ Services Minister Terry Beech. This initiative aims to reduce wait times for passports, federal benefits, and social insurance numbers (SIN), modernizing service delivery amid post-pandemic recovery challenges. A surge in passport renewals after the pandemic led to significant delays, with a Service Canada report noting a near-quadrupling of inquiries between 2021 and 2022. While 1.3 million passports were issued in 2021-22—down from three million in 2018-19—the department has since enhanced resources, including automated systems, online renewals, and expanded in-person capacity.
The standard passport wait time remains 20 business days, with expedited options at two weeks, but the six-week guarantee offers additional leeway.
