China 30-Day Visa-Free Entry 2026: New Rules for Canadians

Last Updated: February 23, 2026

Starting February 17, 2026, citizens of Canada holding ordinary passports can enter China visa-free for stays of up to 30 days. This trial policy is currently scheduled to remain in effect until December 31, 2026.

What is the New Visa-Free Policy?

Previously, Canadians required a rigorous application process, including biometrics and high fees, to visit China. Under the new unilateral waiver, eligible travelers can bypass the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre entirely for short-term visits.

Who is Eligible?

Citizens of the following countries can now enjoy 30-day visa-free entry for tourism, business, and family visits:

  • Canada (Added Feb 2026)
  • United Kingdom (Added Feb 2026)
  • France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, and 40+ other nations.
Feature Requirement
Stay Duration Up to 30 Days
Passport Type Ordinary Passport (6-month validity)
Allowed Activities Tourism, Business, Family Visits, Transit

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Can I extend my 30-day stay once I am in China?

Generally, the visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you plan to stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for a visa at a Chinese embassy or consulate before you travel.

2. Is the 144-hour transit visa still in effect?

Yes, but for Canadians, the new 30-day policy is much more beneficial as it covers the entire country and allows for a longer duration than the previous 144-hour (6-day) transit rules.

3. Do I need to register with the police?

Yes. If you stay in a hotel, they will handle the registration for you. If you are staying with friends or family, you must register at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival.

4. Does this apply to dual citizens?

China does not recognize dual citizenship. If you enter with a Canadian passport, you are treated as a Canadian citizen. Ensure you use the same passport for entry and exit.
