What is an Altered Passport Photo? (Avoid Rejections!)

An altered passport photo is any image that has been digitally edited or modified, making it invalid for a Canadian passport application. Even minor changes can result in application rejection. Below are common photo alterations that are not allowed:

❌ Prohibited Edits in Passport Photos

🔴 Technical Adjustments

Do not modify:

  • Color balance (brightness, contrast, or sharpness)
  • Cropping that alters head and shoulder proportions

🔴 Background Alterations

Not permitted:

  • Cutting and pasting your image onto a white background
  • Removing shadows from the backdrop

🔴 Facial Feature Manipulations

Cannot edit:

  • Eye, nose, mouth, or ear size/shape
  • Any changes to natural appearance

🔴 Appearance Enhancements

Editing to improve looks is NOT allowed:

  • Removing glare or red-eye
  • Changing hair color
  • Erasing scars, birthmarks, or skin imperfections

🔴 Clothing & Accessories Modifications

Not permitted:

  • Changing outfit colors digitally
